Protecting Your Employees

Duty of care is not an abstract phrase. It means your colleagues can count on competent help, quickly, wherever and whenever they work. Protecting employees requires a system that covers people in offices, on shifts, on the road and during events. The building blocks are familiar—needs assessment, training matrix, kit and AED regime, drills and debriefs—but the emphasis is on reliability at all hours and in all locations.

Begin by mapping reality. Identify who is present on each shift, which days have peak attendance, where lone working occurs and how often teams travel. Translate this into the number and level of first aiders needed per location and shift, and add buffer capacity for sickness and leave. Publish a live “today’s first aiders” list and place QR codes at kit points so anyone can summon help fast. Then bring training to your sites so practice happens where incidents will occur; schedule via First Aid Training for Employers – EFAW/FAW (On-Site Nationwide). If your footprint is wide, coordinate standards and records with our nationwide employer delivery model and reporting. Because cardiac events can happen anywhere, embed AED-inclusive modules and drills in every programme. For hybrid patterns, choose on-site EFAW/FAW dates that fit rotas. To knit this into your HRIS and dashboards, plan and book with governance support here.

Protecting employees also means maintaining assets like any safety-critical equipment. Assign named custodians to each first aid kit and AED, set monthly visual and quarterly detailed checks, and restock immediately after use. Track AED pad and battery dates proactively and hold spares on site. Mark routes clearly and ensure access is possible out of hours; carded doors and locked cupboards should never cost minutes in an emergency.

Culture completes the picture. People act faster when they trust the system. Run short, supportive debriefs within forty-eight hours of incidents or drills and share anonymised learning so everyone sees improvements happen. Offer wellbeing support after difficult events and recognise responders publicly. Update your policy and needs assessment after moves, headcount changes or notable incidents so the system stays current.

Protection you can prove is protection that stands up in audits, insurance questions and, most importantly, in the moments that matter. With an employer-centric programme that delivers training, embeds AED confidence and leaves you with tidy records and renewals, you can protect your employees in a way that is both humane and defensible. The entire pathway lives in one place: EFAW/FAW for Employers – book on-site nationwide.
