Procedures to follow when there are disputes in the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)

Following company policies in the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

When delivering the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) it is important to we follow our company policies and procedures and when we make assessment decisions that we make them in accordance with VARCS. Validity, authenticity, reliability, currency and sufficiency. Failing to do this, you open yourself up to complaints.

As a training provider, you need to make your complaints and appeals process available to your learners and when our learners sign up for the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) they are given copies to our policies and procedures so if you are not happy, they can complain.

Complaints in the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

Complaints should be seen as an opportunity to improve and not something that is personal against you. During your time as an assessor, you will build a relationship with your learners, and you will have a better relationship with some learners over another and that is normal. To remain professional, the differences in these relationships should not affect the assessment process or the way that you assess work. At some point during your assessing career, a learner will complain if they are not happy with an aspect of assessment process and normally its when they feel that you have been unfair to them or that you have treated them unfavourable when compared to someone else.

Creating assessment plans in the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

This is one reason that when you create assessment plans, you determine clearly what the assessment expects for a learner to pass the assessment, so it is crystal clear which enables everyone to see in clear black and white what is needed for the pass and what constitutes as a referral. Let’s use first aid as our example. We need our learners to perform CPR. Our assessment plan cannot say CPR as its too brief and there are variations to what is accepted from one trainer to another, so we need to be very specific in the assessment criteria. We are going to add 28-32 chest compressions and 5-6cm depth per compression to our assessment criteria. We can make it more detailed here but as you can see, we have now set clearer requirements that learners much complete 28-32 chest compression and reach a depth of 5-6 cm depth per compression to pass the assessment. This is much clearer and can make your assessment decision more transparent which your learners are more likely to accept if they didn’t meet the assessment criteria.

Referring to your centre manager in the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement

First when and if a learner complains on our Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) then the learner would first raise this with the tutor who will remark the work. If the learner is still unhappy with the decision made, then the work will be remarked independently by the IQA. If the learner is still unhappy with the decision made, the learner can now refer the decision to the Centre Manager who will view the assessment process, assessment records and then make a final decision. If the learner is still not happy with this decision, then the learner would be encouraged to raise this with the awarding body to confirm assessment decisions. This is the last resort and something we encourage as our company values want transparency in our decisions and to provide everyone with fair treatment in accordance with the Equality Act.
