Level up with Blooms Domains of Learning

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is the only qualification that can allow someone to teach all levels of education. You will learn how to apply Blooms domains of learning, which are key skills for teaching.

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a qualification that focuses on the broader aspects of teaching. The course equips learners with skills to help them teach adults, including those with disabilities or special needs.

Blooms Domains of Learning in the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

The blog will discuss how we apply Bloom's domains of learning to the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training in order to provide students with an engaging and challenging educational experience.

Bloom (1956) stated that learning goes through 5 stages, these are:

  1. Attention;
  2. Perception;
  3. Understanding;
  4. Short/long term memory;
  5. Change in behaviour

Ultimately in any industry, our end goal is to modify learners’ behaviour. These stages will affect our learners actions, thinking and emotions when enrolled on the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. Once learning is successful, there will be a change of behaviour and this can be from how learners plan their sessions to managing challenging behaviour.  

Changing Learner Behaviour in the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

When planning our lessons, we need to consider which of the three domains we want to reach. These are known as:

  • psycho-motor as the hands (skills);
  • cognitive as the head (knowledge and understanding);
  • affective as the heart (attitudes).

The affective domain includes the manner in how we deal with things emotionally, such as feelings, values, appreciation, enthusiasms, motivations, and attitudes. Within the Level 5 Diploma and Education and Training, these are developed within the Equality and Diversity, Coaching and Mentoring and Personal Tutoring units.

The psychomotor domain includes physical movement, coordination, and use of the motor ­skill areas however are not aims within the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. However this brings us to the cognitive domain.

The cognitive domain is the main domain used within the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training. The cognitive domain involves knowledge and the development of intellectual skills. This includes the recall or recognition of specific facts,  procedural patterns, and concepts that serve in the development of intellectual abilities and skills. 

Six Levels of Learning within the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training

Bloom identified six different levels of learning with associated objectives that could be used when teaching and assessing learning, for example:

  1. Knowledge – list, recall, state;
  2. Comprehension – describe, explain, identify;
  3. Application – apply, construct, solve;
  4. Analysis – calculate; compare, contrast;
  5. Synthesis – argue, define, summarise;
  6. Evaluation – criticise, evaluate, reflect.

Within the TAQA suite, we can compare the Level 3 Award in Education and Training, Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training and the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training using Blooms domains of learning.

The higher the level of your teaching qualification, the higher the domain you will be learning and hence the difficulty of the verb increases.

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a greater step up and takes learning further by getting you to analyse your teaching methods. In this case you are identifying strengths and limitations of teaching methods.

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training moves you further up the domains and increases the difficulty where the goal is for you to argue. If we use learning styles at this stage, you will argue whether learning styles are useful and applicable to the classroom. You will have your own opinions on these but you will back up your answers with relevant literature to demonstrate further understanding.
