Is the DET a recognised qualification?
The DET is rigorously regulated by Ofqual, ensuring national and international recognition. It's endorsed by all esteemed training providers, colleges, and universities.
Can I work in a school after I complete the DET?
The DET allows you to apply for registration with QTLS. This is the equivalent to QTS and is recognised. Schools prefer QTS however most schools will accept QTLS but is at the school’s discretion. Teaching in schools usually requires a recognised teaching qualification like a PGCE along with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).
Can I apply for QTLS after completion of the DET?
Yes, this course allows you to apply for QTLS immediately after gaining your certificate.
What are the pre-requisites?
- You must be at least 19 years old
- You must possess good reading & writing skills in English at Level 2
- You must possess knowledge of the subject you wish to teach/deliver
- You must have access to learners aged 14+ in any teaching environment in groups of 6 plus to meet the 100 hours teaching practice
- You must be self-motivated
Do I need a teaching placement?
You will need to be observed teaching and must complete 100 hours of teaching learners aged 14+. You are responsible for sourcing your teaching placement. Your placement can be in a voluntary role and you do not need to be in a teaching position before you start the course but is recommended.
How are the teaching hours observed?
You can use a friend or mentor to assess 8 hours of your teaching. They must be qualified as a teacher to a minimum of Level 5 teaching such as the DET and produce CVs and teaching certificates.
What if I don’t have my own observer?
Don't worry., we can arrange a time and date to observe you and you will set up a laptop in your classroom where we can observe you online.
How many lesson plans do I need to produce?
You need to log 100 hours but you don’t need to produce 100 hours of lesson plans. You only need to produce lesson plans on the observed lessons.
I only teach one subject,, how can I produce a scheme of work?
You only create a scheme of work on the programme that you deliver. Some learners meet the teaching hours by delivering the same subject over and over.
Do I have to attend every lesson?
The classes are optional, you can attend any lesson you wish to which suits your schedule. It is designed to fit in with your current life plans.
How long do I have to complete the qualification?
You have up to 2 years to complete the qualification. Once this expires, you may pay a minor fee to reregister you on the qualification.
What does the Level 5 DET cover? The diploma covers a wide range of topics including teaching and learning strategies, curriculum development, assessment methods, understanding learner needs, and the broader educational context. It's designed to equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to become an effective educator.
Can I study the Level 5 DET online? Yes, we offer online or blended learning options for the Level 5 DET, allowing you to study at your own pace and fit your studies around your existing commitments.
What is the difference between Level 5 DET and a PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)?
While both qualifications are related to teaching and education, the Level 5 DET is primarily focused on practical teaching skills and is often seen as a vocational qualification. A PGCE, on the other hand, is a more academic qualification that typically includes theoretical aspects of teaching along with practical experience.
Can I progress to higher qualifications after completing the Level 5 DET?
Certainly. Upon completing the Level 5 DET, you might consider progressing to our Level 6 Diploma in Teaching and Learning or a Master's in Education (M.Ed.) or a similar advanced qualification.
What career opportunities are available after completing the Level 5 DET?
After completing the Level 5 DET, you can pursue various teaching and training roles within the further education and training sector. These include positions such as adult education tutor, vocational trainer, lecturer in colleges or training centres, educational consultant, and curriculum developer.
Can I apply for funding or financial support to study the Level 5 DET?
We do not accept funding. Funded training providers can loan you your course fees which need to be paid back which are generally 4.5x higher. As such, we have interest free monthly payment plans available.
Can I specialise in a specific subject area with the Level 5 DET?
While the Level 5 DET covers a broad range of teaching and training principles, it doesn't typically include specialization in a specific subject area. Your expertise in a subject should come from your prior qualifications and experience.
Do I need to have teaching experience before enrolling in the Level 5 DET?
While prior teaching experience can be beneficial, it's not always a strict requirement for enrolling in the Level 5 DET. The qualification is designed to support both aspiring educators and those who are already teaching.
Are there any practical assessments that involve working with real students?

You have up to 2-years to complete this course however many students often complete the Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training in under 12-months.
