With many different teaching and assessing qualifications and the new requirements set by awarding bodies, students are often bamboozled by the teaching qualifications required to teach their own first aid courses. Is it the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) or is the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA)?

With an average salary of £200 per day for a first aid trainer and lots of opportunities to run your own courses or work freelance, becoming a first aid training has become a good side gig and even better if you are already teaching other subjects. If you already possess the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET).

Surprisingly the standards required by awarding bodies are low to become a first aid trainer. Simply put, you need a first aid certificate and a teaching qualification like the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET) to teach First Aid courses. Better yet, you could possess the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) and still teach.

Experience needed to become a first aid instructor

We do recommend that you have substantial experience in the medical field to teach first aid however this is not a requirement. Experience can be gained by being a first aider at work, volunteering or simply shadowing other qualified first aid trainers. As we’ve all been taught, we gain experience by doing so you can get more experience and improve your teaching for each course that you deliver.

Unless you are a medical professional such as a Doctor, nurse or paramedic, you can become a first aid trainer by getting your own First Aid certificate. If you’ve done an advanced course such as First Person on Scene (FPOS) or First Response in Emergency Care (FREC) both at level 3 then these will be sufficient to allow you to teach as long as you possess the Level 3 Award in Education and Training AET).

The most confusing question about teaching first aid is which qualification that you need. Each awarding body will have differing requirements about the Assessor qualifications but you will be good with any of the teaching qualifications of Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (CET) and Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (DET). If you already hold the Level 3 Certificate in Assessing Vocational Achievement (CAVA) then you will be covered.

Do you want to become an IQA?

Internal Quality Assurers will verify that the first aid trainer and assessor have been delivering the qualification to the required standards and put action plans in place to make sure the quality is good and improvement plans are actioned. The Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is a valuable qualification to hold and there needs to be one for every organisation in every subject. To be an Internal Quality Assurer for First Aid courses, you need to have the tutor qualifications like the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (AET), First Aid certificate and the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice. Again, this is a requirement to be an IQA for First Aid.

We have explained the competence, qualifications and expertise required to be a First Aid trainer. Start your Level 3 Award in Education & Training (AET) with us today!
