Different techniques for sampling the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

IQA Strategy for the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

Your IQA strategy should take into account all aspects of the assessment process from when they sign up to the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice to when they claim their certificate for the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice.

Sampling techniques for the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

Before we look at our techniques that we use, you should start by identifying our strategy. Our IQA strategy for the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice is that we have the following:

  • 1 IQA.
  • 8 assessors.
  • Approximately 200 learner per year.

We will observe each assessor twice per year (four times for newly qualified assessors or those in their first year with us). That’s sampling more from inexperienced or new staff as the risk is higher. We will talk with all learners and all witnesses that are used. We will sample both units from each assessor across a mixture of learners. I will chair a bi-monthly team meeting and facilitate a bi-monthly standardisation activity to cover all learning outcomes across both units. These standardisation meetings are done at different times to our chair meeting so there is a specific focus. We maintain full records of these activities and record meeting minutes. We also implement all external quality assurance action points.

When sampling evidence from the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice, we don’t sample all learners 100% as its time consuming and double assessment. And when I say double assessment, you just end of assessing again. We use a traffic light system for sampling rates.

Assessor ratios when sampling Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice

New and inexperienced assessors assessing the Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice will have 100% sampling for their first 2-3 cohorts. If there are no problems identified, we drop them down to 75% for the next 2-3 cohorts, then down to 50% for the next 2-3 cohorts and finally down to 25% as they get more experienced.

Under no circumstances do we completely drop sampling and all portfolios are still sampled however we will sample a smaller fraction of each. Plus, our administration team will go over all work to ensure that we fill in the basic errors which are often neglected and then returned to the IQA, assessor or learner to ensure we submit fully compliant work to the awarding body.

Types of sampling that you do should be mixed. We’re going to start with the term’s interim and summative. Interim sampling is sampling whilst the learner is still studying which summative is at the end. Both are perfectly good methods but with interim sampling, you can still make positive changes if you find anything lacking whereas summative it’s a little late to make those changes. Interim sampling is better with inexperienced and new assessors.

You need to consider which assessment types and methods you are going to sample and will be largely dictated by the qualification. Technology can play a massive part of sampling as you will get to see more.
